On March 23 and 24, Theatre South students at William A. Shine Great Neck South High School took the stage to perform Johann Strauss’s opera, Die Fledermaus. The play takes place in 1890 Vienna and follows the story of Gabriel von Eisenstein (played by Alex Michalopoulos), who has been sentenced to eight days in prison. He is about to leave for jail when his friend, Falke (played by Michael Levinson), persuades him to postpone going to jail and, instead, attend the Prince Orlofsky’s (played by Nicole Bonura) ball. While at the ball, Eisenstein runs into his maid, Adele (played by Karen Notovitz), her sister Sally (played by Lauren Yagoda), and his wife Rosalinda (played by Gabrielle Lowell) in disguise, who fools around with her old friend Alfred (played by Steven Telsey). Once at jail he sees Frank, the prison governor (played by AJ Malakoff), whom he met and became good friends with the night before at the ball. In the end, all of Eisenstein’s friends played a practical joke on him, which he took well.
