On Friday, Jan. 20, South’s Improv Troupe held its first show of the year. Tickets were $5 and refreshments were served. The show consisted of several improvisation games performed by the troupe.

The Improv Troupe is a student-run branch of Theatre South. Led by seniors Nicole Bonura and Michael L., the troupe practices every Sunday night.

“The troupe means an incredible amount to me,” said Michael L. “Every Sunday evening I look forward to those three hours of practice…it’s not all fun and ‘games’, however (pun intended).”

A typical practice runs from 5:30-8:30 at one of the captain’s houses. First, the troupe warms up. They then proceed to go through different games, working on skills and critiquing scenes. According to Michael L., “most of all, we have plain good ol’ fun.”

Sophomore James Kennedy, a member of troupe, remarked, “I loved being on the troupe. It’s just another way to get my creative energy out…and not to mention the free comedy show you get to see every Sunday during practices.”

Try-outs for the troupe are held every September. Michael L. “encourages everyone to try out for the troupe because the truth is, you never know.” He also added that he never thought he would be good enough to make the troupe, saying “look at me now.”

Like Michael L., Kennedy believes, “there’s no reason not to try out.” He said, “You get to meet great people, laugh an absurd amount, and just have fun, even if you don’t make it.”

The troupe holds two shows a year at South and also performs at the Great Neck Public Library’s “Levels” program. The troupe encourages everyone to come watch their shows.

Sophomore Erica L. attends most Theatre South events, but the Improv shows are her favorite. She said, “They’re just laugh-out-loud funny.”

The Improv Troupe will hold its next show at school on Friday, May 18.
