Into the Woods

The Narrator (junior Benjamin Weber) leads the Little Girl (Beatrice Malfi) through the story of Into the Woods. Beatrice Malfi is a fifth grader at Lakeville Elementary School, and she is playing Miss Hannigan in Lakeville's Annie. Fun fact: Beatrice's sister junior Isabella Malfi played the same role for her performance in Annie.
Junior Jack Doremus played Jack (not as himself) for Theater South's rendition of Into the Woods.
The Witch (senior Kelly Gragossian) embraces Rapunzel (junior Alexis Pramberger) during the song "Stay With Me."
The Wolf (junior Noah Harouche) learns that Little Red Riding Hood (freshman Haylie Lempert) is on her way to her grandmother's house.
The Witch (Gragossian) returns to her youthful appearance at the end of Act 1.
The Baker's Wife (junior Isabella Malfi) and Cinderella's Prince (Harouche) engage in an affair in the second act behind the backs of their spouses.
Rapunzel's Prince (sophomore Jake Dieber) and Cinderella's Prince (Harouche) lament over their love lives in the song "Agony Reprise."
The Witch (Gragossian) racks up the most costume changes in the play with three outfits.
Cinderella's Father (freshman Justin Lin) and Lucinda (freshman Maggie Roach) grimace and shriek as Cinderella's Stepmother (senior Amanda Madenberg) hews off Florinda's (senior Samantha Ng) toes in order for Florinda to fit Cinderella's slipper. Fans of Grimms' Fairy Tales will recognize this plot point from the Grimm Brothers' version of Cinderella.
The Baker (senior Jonathan Schindler) and the Baker's Wife (Malfi) look on the events occurring center stage.
Cinderella often visits the grave of her mother to find solace. Cinderella's Mother (senior Vanna Qing) sings from beyond the grave to give her daughter advice.
Cinderella's stepsisters Lucinda (Roach) and Florinda (Ng) haughtily fan themselves.

Into the Woods is a musical by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapin that combines elements of several popular fairy tale stories like Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Little Red Riding Hood with an original story about a baker and his wife trying to start a family. The musical debuted in 1986 and Disney released a film adaption in 2014. On Nov. 19 and 20, Theater South performed its own rendition of Into the Woods accompanied by a full student pit orchestra.

Corrections: Dec. 8, 2015
One caption incorrectly identified the Baker’s Wife as senior Elora Aclin. Junior Isabella Malfi performed this role. The Witch does return to her youthful appearance at the end of Act 1; however, the image used with the caption was not one of The Witch at the end of Act 1 but instead during Act 2. The cast does not bow at the end of Act 1 but at the end of Act 2.
